June 16 is the International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR), proclaimed by the UN General Assembly with the aim to recognize the contribution of migrants to the development of their communities and countries back home, and to create a future of hope for their children.

In this context, the virtual event will mark the launch of the IDFR 2020 Campaign “Building resilience in times of crisis”. It will see the participation of selected Ministers of Finance and government representatives, international organizations and private sector entities.

Remittances directly impact one billion people: they are sent home by 200 million migrants, an estimated half of whom are women, to help feed, shelter, educate, support the health and entrepreneurship of 800 million family members. Valued at a record US$554 billion in 2019, these flows have been dramatically impacted by COVID-19, as transfers are expected to decline by almost 20 per cent in 2020.

The event will address these challenges and respond with actionable recommendations to support remittance families in building resilience and reach their ‘own’ sustainable development goals”.

The event can be watched on YouTube Live Streaming and you can ask questions using the #familyremittances Twitter hashtag.
