Masud es una de esas historias que ayudan a entender situaciones tan inimaginables como cercanos para un occidental de a pie. Basada en hechos reales, esta historieta gráfica narra las peripecias de Nicolai Bystrov, el soldado comunista del Ejército Rojo que tras caer preso de los muyahidines se convirtió en guardaespaldas y hombre de confianza de Alhmad Masud, señor de la guerra, ministro de Defensa y líder político, declarado héroe nacional por el expresidente de Afganistán, Hamid Karzai.
Se trata de una obra gráfica que se desarrolla en un contexto de la historia reciente poco habitual. El gran trabajo de documentación unido a un dibujo realista y un guion impecable, introduce en un episodio bélico carente de tintes épicos o de cualquier atisbo de ficción. “El guardaespaldas de Masud” habla de la guerra y de decisiones personales desde el respeto. La escala de grises y ocres que iluminan las escenas, prácticamente monócromas, refuerzan la dureza y sobriedad del contexto en el que se desarrolló el conflicto afgano-soviético. El cómic se remata con un dosier histórico sobre Afganistán, fotografías y apéndices biográficos sobre Ahmad Masud y Nikolai Bystrov.
