We are honored to conclude our Women's Month campaign by featuring our very own Violeta Domínguez Acosta, Head of Spanish Cooperation in the Philippines A seasoned development cooperation specialist with extensive international experience, Violeta has led and served in various AECID Offices around the world, bringing strong expertise in international development and strategic leadership. In the Philippines, she has played a key role in advancing Spanish Cooperation's priorities-promoting human rights, fostering a green and sustainable economy, and empowering women and youth She also played a pivotal role in the signing of the Country Partnership Framework 2025-2028 in November 2024, a milestone that further strengthens the partnership between Spain and the Philippines. Meet Liza - a fearless 25-vear-old human rights defender from Cebu City and the Secretary General of Karapatan - Central Visavas. Inspired by her experience witnessing state-persecuted individuals stand up for Indigenous Peoples' rights, Liza made a bold decision: to dedicate her life to defending the voiceless and standing with communities demanding justice. She leads paralegal trainings, provides legal support to political prisoners, and works tirelessly alongside victims of human rights violations across Cebu, Bohol, and Negros Islands - strengthening communities and advancing the fight for dignity, self-determination, and freedom. Women like Liza are not just part of the movement - they lead it. Their courage confronts injustice. Their leadership builds stronger communities. Perla, a 44-year-old single mother from Barangay Matin-ao in Burgos, Surigao del Norte, shows how community leadership often begins with a simple goal: providing for one's family As an active member of the Matin-ao Farmers Association, Perla joined to build a stable livelihood for her children. Today, she is part of a growing movement promoting sustainable practices through the Siargao Green Economy Project, implemented by Action Against Hunger, a key development partner of AECID in the Philippines. The association is working to establish a community composting facility that transforms biodegradable waste into nutrient-rich compost for local farms-reducing waste while strengthening food production. Beyond gardening, Perla and fellow members also take part in barangay clean-ups and recycling initiatives, even repurposing plastic bottles as plant pots. For Perla, her motivation remains simple: "What motivates me to continue is my family. This helps support them." Her message to other women and girls is clear: have conviction, stand firm in your goals, and encourage others to grow with you. Daisy is a respected Filipino poet, translator, interpreter, and retired professor from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where she taught Spanish and Italian for many years. She has authored acclaimed poetry collections including En la línea del horizonte and Momentos e instantes, the latter receiving the Premio José Rizal de las Letras Filipinas in Madrid Her Chabacano poetry book Hermoso palabra: Un obra chabacano also earned the Premio Antonio Abad Beyond writing, she has translated major literary and historica works and served as a simultaneous interpreter in international conferences across Asia and Australia. Today, she is Director of the Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española, continuing her mission of promoting Spanish language and culture in the Philippines. Despite her many achievements, she says her favorite role is still teaching-proudly answering to the name her students lovingly call her: "Profe." Roxanne Sumalag is a native of Suyang, Tabuk City, Kalinga. She has spent her life helping farmers and her community. She started as a teacher but later chose to follow her passion for farming, believing she could make a bigger impact by supporting others in agriculture. Today, Roxanne works as a training facilitator in the Department of Agriculture, an accredited course trainer at TESDA, and a technical expert for chili production in communities such as Amlao, Balawag, and Suyang. She teaches farmers new techniques, helps improve local agriculture, and encourages women to take active roles in farming and leadership. Roxanne’s journey shows the importance of hard work and commitment. She manages her responsibilities as a professional, mentor, and community worker, showing that women can succeed and inspire others at the same time. Her life demonstrates how knowledge, patience, and care can make a lasting impact on the people around her. Meet Denise, a 44-year-old entrepreneur, hairdresser, hairstylist, and makeup artist from Mampang in Zamboanga Citv. with more than decade of experience in the beauty industry. After a devastating fire destroyed her business, Denise faced the difficult challenge of starting over. But with determination and resilience-and with the support of the Philippine Red Cross and the Spanish Red Cross through the AECID-funded Green Livelihood Projectshe was able to rebuild her dreams. Through training, seed capital, and coaching, Denise successfully revived her salon. Today, her story is one of remarkable recovery and growth: she has renovated her shop, created jobs by hiring five employees, and even opened a second branch. Beyond business success, Denise is also committed to sustainability, introducing greener practices in her salon by reducing single-use waste. A proud ally of the LGBTQ+ community, Denise believes that entrepreneurship can be a powerful platform for inclusion, empowerment, and positive change. Irene, a native of La Paz, Agusan del Sur in Mindanao, is not your typical development worker. She is also a respected woman leader in her community, known as Bae Malahutajon, serving as the Indigenous (IP) Clan Leader of the Manobo Tribe of Agusan. In this role, she champions the rights, traditions, and welfare of her community, bridging local knowledge with modern development initiatives. Professionally, Irene is a Bio-Input and Technology Specialist working with Fundación CODESPA, a long-standing partner of AECID in the Philippines. She combines her technical expertise with her deep cultural understanding to implement sustainable agricultural and livelihood projects that empower Indigenous communities, particularly women, while preserving ancestral practices.
