AECID's
Humanitarian Action has included responding to emergencies caused by natural
disasters over the past 25 years: Hurricane Mitch in 1998, the Indonesian
tsunami in 2004, the earthquakes in Haiti in 2010, Nepal in 2015 and Ecuador in
2016, Hurricane Matthew in Haiti in 2016, flooding in Sierra Leone, the
earthquake in Mexico in 2017 and Hurricane Irma, in the Caribbean, in 2017. In
2018, our humanitarian action has included Indonesia following the Lombok
earthquakes and India following the flooding in Kerala.
Our
humanitarian response has also covered the needs arising from fighting in the
Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the needs created by the effects
of climate change—above all in the Sahel—or by chronic and forgotten crises, such as that of the
Sahrawi population in Tindouf, the Palestinian population, or the displaced
persons of Colombia.
