On 4h October, The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) through its co-implementing partner the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID), will be hosting a CoM SSA Day event during the Week for Sustainable Mobility and Climate #SMDC2022 in Dakar, Senegal, organised by CODATU Association, CETUD, and Climate Chance Association. The long-day event will host a series of sessions on climate change adaptation through ecosystem-based solutions, coastal risk management and energy efficiency in the African context, and cross-cutting issues of climate management and climate finance. A high-level opening will set the stage for the day.

The programme includes five thematic sessions linked to innovative adaptation strategies to exploit environmental and socioeconomic opportunities to face climate change. Each session will close with final reflections as conclusions that will serve as pointers to future actions.

Gonzalo Vega, AECID Head of Sub-Saharan Africa Department, stated that "local governments in Africa know how climate change is affecting their development, they need to join voices to be heard in bigger and higher arenas. Both, CoM SSA Day and the Week for Sustainable Mobility and Climate offer the space for this to happen before COP27 takes place next month."

"Climate change is a serious and growing threat to our wellbeing and a healthy planet and our actions today will shape how people adapt and nature response to increasing climate risks. Through initiatives such as CoM SSA, climate community in Africa can keep innovating, exchanging, and creating synergies to act and adapt efficiently and effectively on challenges that climate puts to the continent" declared Cristina Moyano, AECID's CoM SSA Coordinator.

The event programme will bring many relevant members of the climate change community in Africa and will allow participants to attend panel discussions with presentations, workshops, debates among thought leaders, climate experts, and field actors. In addition, CoM SSA will promote spaces for city-to-city exchanges, twinning arrangements, and horizontal and triangular cooperation.

All sessions of the CoM SSA Day event will be offered in the three CoM SSA official languages: English, French, and Portuguese. It is an in-person event and registration for attending is compulsory.
